Space Shuttle Discovery STS-116 12/9/2006 night launch!

Here's a video I captured of the shuttle launch. It happened at about 8:46pm EST on Dec 9. The video was captured 6 miles from the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, using my old Canon PowerShot A75, which unfortunately handles only 30 seconds per video clip. So, this video is stitched together from two such clips. Also, the first clip doesn't have audio, so the first half of the video is silent. Ah well. You'll probably also notice that the first half is especially jittery. That's because I was busy destroying my vocal cords cheering.

Very cool

Man, I wish I could have been there for this. How did you end up in Florida for this thing?

We drove.

We spent about 16 or 17 hours on the road getting there. Because launches typically get delayed, we planned on spending the whole following week in Florida too, so it wasn't like "Drive 16 hours, spend a day or two at Kennedy, then drive 16 hours back." We actually got around to seeing Disney and Universal and playing some mini-golf. For the launch event, you can actually buy viewing tickets online for any of the launches at Kennedy.

Oh, and I definitely recommend seeing a shuttle launch at least once (at night, if it can be helped). It is an absolutely overwhelming experience. Also, go on the tour if you get down there... There are some pretty amazing things to see in Kennedy.
